shrubs cubed.

Husband and I are pretty much professional landscapers.
Today we were hedge-trimmin' fools.
It was so hot and humid.
My arms were tired.
My fingers were cramping.
My brain hurt.
Sweat ran like Niagara.
And I might have been grouchy for a second at Husband for pruning a little too skinny.
But we nailed it.
Square.

*I honestly wasn't going to blog this, but then Elyssa came home from work and after she saw the shrubs she asked if I was going to take pictures of them for the blog and I was like, "um, no."  But then I thought better because I always post absolutely everything, so why wouldn't I post about some pruning we did?  Duh.

dear nicole: my latest, cutest etsy find.

I love to share the wonderful goodies I find {and purchase} on Etsy.  I hope you don't mind me sharing them with you.  :)

The star above my fireplace was missing a little something.  I wasn't quite sure what it was... until I happened upon this little banner at Dear Nicole and I knew EXACTLY what it was missing!  So cute, right?

They also sell a Bloom banner and a Grace banner, which are equally adorable.  I only chose Home because my flowers don't bloom and in graciousness, I might be lacking.

Anyway, Nikki and Nicky are the sweetest shop owners {I know because I've been stalking them on Instagram} and I really just wanted to share their talents.  Sometimes it's the little things, ya know?

this is why i was smiling this morning.

"I wish I could sing because then I'd be romantic, but I can't and it's stupid."

Hey, it's Friday!!!!  We made it through the first week of school!!!!  We're walking like sleep-deprived zombies around here, but that still counts as success!  Now for a rewarding three-day weekend in which we can catch up on some zzzzzz's!

Moving?  Here's some great advice for cross-country moves.  I can relate to the mental breakdowns and getting lost.

This will change how you eat food.  McKenna just showed me how to use a straw to de-stem strawberries!

This gorgeous J Crew ball cap is ridiculous in price, but sooooo cute.  I'll settle for this one!

It's still too hot here in Pittsburgh, but soon it will be critter sweater season!!!

This is in the mail to my house right now!  I know exactly where I'm putting it!

This card is too perfect.  Are you having Downton Abbey withdrawals too?

Guilty as charged.

Have a wonderful weekend, peeps!

three for thursday. real life.

There's a funny meme out there about how some lives can look so pinterest-perfect {beautiful food, well-behaved children, gorgeous gardens}, while the rest of us are just happy to be breathing.  I try to keep things real here on the blog, but only in a positive light because my family is involved and the last thing I want to do is embarrass them.  I also love taking photos and that generally involves pointing my camera at the pretty things in life, not so much the ugly.  I suppose this can make my life appear next to ideal, but I have poop to scoop, just like everyone else.  I get stressed.  I burn dinner.  I put off cleaning bathrooms to do my school work.  I sometimes stay in my pajamas all day to write an essay.  I panic at 5pm daily wondering what on Earth I'm going to make for dinner.  I have zero green thumb skills {and I thought I was getting so good!}.

So, here are three little peeks into the not done-up...

1.  My quiet mornings on the computer.  I'm having a hard time waking up early with the kids for school.  The kids really are so independent now at getting dressed, eating breakfast, making lunches, getting backpacks together that I am completely unnecessary except to ask annoying questions and repeat gentle reminders.  I sit on the couch in my pj's and dig into my Government/Constitution class from 6:30am until around 11:30am when I suddenly feel the need to shower, eat, do laundry and run to the grocery store.  Occasionally I get up to refill my Diet Coke that is keeping me semi-awake.

2.  My bed stays unmade until noon on most days.  I blame the Constitution.

3.  Just last week these plants were looking so pretty, but somehow I've managed to destroy them.  All I have to do is look at them wrong.

Other than that, my life is honestly just like Pinterest.

*Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

wear. and the subject of commitment.

Outfit posts and I have had a back-and-forth relationship and I have been very open about it.  I go on and on and on and on and on and on about the awkwardness I feel in regards to posing for the camera, yet I continue to do it.
It's got to be ANNOYING, I know.
I'm going to appear like I'm going off topic for a moment, but I promise I'll bring it back around and tie it all together nicely in the end...
The other day, the adults in the family were having a discussion about the stresses of making life decisions, as I imagine most families with college-going kids have.  The topic was based on choosing a college major, which can feel like the biggest, scariest decision to make.  What if I choose the wrong degree?  What if that leads to the wrong career?  STRESS! To sum up our conversation in the shortest way possible, Husband's and my advice to any college student {like our daughter} is to choose to study what you are passionate about today and don't look too far ahead into the future.  You can never know where one moment will take you to the next.  Set goals, plan, and make adjustments as the need arises.  And for the love of all that is good in this world, there comes a time when you need to stop looking at all of your options and just pick one and commit already!  Because when you commit, the choices are removed and you are freeeeeeeee {!!!} from the stress of making decisions!
You can move on.
And as I promised, I'm bringing the conversation back to tie into my outfit posts...
I'm just going to shut up with this shy crap and commit already.
A lot of you seem to like them.
I like them.
Done.

If this was confusing, I apologize.  I'm really just trying to say that I'm going to continue posting me and my wears on a regular basis.

is there nothing quite so awesome as new bedding?

First thing... the cat asks that you please don't mind the fluorescent Nike's under the dresser or the crazy stack of notecards in the nightstand, or the tote/camera bags exploding out of the corner, or the trash peeking out of the garbage.  Real people live here.  Thanks!

So, Husband and I went into Sam's Club for toilet paper and we ended up bringing home so much more.  Does this happen to you?  We actually found this quilt/sham set there for a really great price.  We both hated our previous comforter but never shared our exact same feelings for it until we were both standing in the aisle, looking at this new one.  I love when that happens.  It's like Christmas.  There's no negotiating or arguing.
We both like something together at the same time!
Let's buy it!
Yay us!

*Even the cat loves the new bedding.  Let's see how long before it digs its claws in!  Oh, and the delightfully teal pillows are on clearance at Target right this second.

first day of school pictures. no duh.

Girls go to college to get more knowledge.

Boys go to high school to get more cool.

Girls go to middle school because they rule.

The kids are out the door and they had smiles on their faces!  Elyssa is off to the Big Campus, Jackson is entering high school for the first time, and McKenna is chilling in the 6th grade.

I love these brave, smart, awesome souls!

the kids are gone. the house is quiet.

moving furniture around. it's therapy.

Every once in a while I move furniture around.  I get bored and Doh! There goes a table or a chair or whatever I happen to be fixated on at the moment.
Today it all started with a vacuum cleaner.
All I wanted to do was vacuum the floors...
when suddenly I found myself dragging our thrifted leather chair from the living room to the family room.
Which then, of course, led to scooting out the wooden bookcase and baskets to replace the empty space I just made in the living room.
Which then meant I had to unplug lamps and move them around, plug them in, decide I didn't like the new placement, grab a lamp from our bedroom, move them around again, and finally get it right.
And then there was all that decor that needed rearranging, of course.  A few times.

Oh and then I had to finish vacuuming.

I suppose that furniture rearranging {as a hobby} {or as an addiction} has its bonuses.  Like saving money!!!  Rather than go out and purchase new items to fill a space, I find myself "shopping"from my bedroom to decorate a living room space or "stealing"from the basement to add to the kitchen.  Things are in semi-constant rotation around here.  And I hate to even think about it right now, but I suppose in just three months I'll be moving things around again to make room for Christmas trees.  Can you believe I just said that???  It's still summer!

Are you constantly moving decor and furniture around too?
I give my mom all the credit for that inherited trait.  :)

fashionably, friday.

Dress: Target
Boots: Nordstrom

I might or might not be considering posting more outfits on this dandy blog {again}.  I'm so wishy-washy when it comes to this subject.  So no promises for a long term commitment, but it sounds fun for right now.  Maybe.  :)  Anyway, I plan to wear this little number on date night {if my poison ivy rash ever goes away}.  Did I mention that I now have poison ivy???  Well, I do.  And it's horrible.

Here are some things that aren't horrible, however...

A smart way to clean out your closet.

31 questions that will change your life.

32 books that will change your life.  I've only read two.

It's fair season!

Cool world map.

Have you seen this crazy pool basketball dunk?

This made me laugh so hard.  I'm sorry, but it's so true.

Have a spectacular weekend, friends!

three for thursday.

1. My favorite cat sitting on chevron stripes = way more love than any human should have for such a lazy, pretentious animal.

2.  Freshman of the house up at 6am to practice for school next week.  Please note the picture was taken at 9am because there is no way in heck I am ready to be up at 6am.

3.  If you follow me on Instagram then you might know about the gnome we've captured from Target and placed in our candle-cage {also from Target}.  If not, you should totally add me to your Instagram feed!  @acrossanddown

Happy Thursday!!!
